RivCo Student Accused Of Bringing Handgun Onto High School Campus: Police

A K-9 unit and bomb squad also conducted a search of the campus, officials said.

PERRIS, CA — A student allegedly carried a gun onto the campus of Orange Vista High School in Perris Friday, but the firearm was seized without incident and the juvenile suspect was arrested.

According to the Val Verde Unified School District, VVUSD police officers were sent to the campus on East Orange Avenue Friday morning after an unknown party called the department, saying a student was in possession of a handgun.

"Officers immediately responded and quickly located and safely recovered the weapon," the district stated. "A student was taken into custody."

The youth's name was not disclosed. He was booked into Riverside Juvenile Hall on suspicion of being in possession of a firearm on school grounds.

"Out of an abundance of caution, our police partnered with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department," according to a statement from the VVUSD. "The department's K-9 unit and bomb squad conducted an additional search of the campus."

No other threats were identified.

Classes concluded for the day, and parents and guardians were permitted to retrieve their children while authorities continued to search the campus.

There was no word on why the suspect brought the gun to school.
