UPDATE 6:42 p.m.: An hours-long standoff situation continues in the Wildomar area this evening, with no estimate as to when the incident may be resolved. As of 6:42 p.m., the sheriff's department stated the incident was "still an active and fluid situation."

"RSO is still actively working the incident," the sheriff's department stated in a previous Twitter update. "Be aware of the road closure on Clinton Keith and Inland Valley. Please be patient and use alternate routes."

The standoff began about 1 p.m. in the area of Clinton Keith and Smith Ranch roads, according to sheriff's officials. The suspect and circumstances were unclear, with officials only emphasizing the need for motorists to avoid the area.

According to the sheriff's department, the activity was isolated to a residential area just north of Clinton Keith. Homes in the area were evacuated for public safety as deputies deployed, and Smith Ranch Road was closed to traffic, according to reports from the scene.

Elsewhere in Southwest Riverside County, a sheriff's deputy was involved in a shooting with a suspect this evening, but that case was unrelated, officials said.

UPDATE 3:55 p.m.: There is still a "very active" police presence in Wildomar on Thursday afternoon related to a situation developing in town, sheriff's officials say. Roads remain blocked and "evacuations have been completed in the immediate area."

A sheriff's spokeswoman could not immediately confirm how many people were affected by the current evacuations. However, officials say there is no threat to public safety.
