Deadly Lake Elsinore Crash Was Result of Illegal Street Race: Police

Sheriff's officials say a passenger in one of the racing vehicles died after it slammed into a light pole. Two people have been arrested.

LAKE ELSINORE, CA- Sheriff's officials say a teenager died over the weekend in Lake Elsinore when an illegal street race got out of control.

According to Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. Nathan Kaas, the deadly crash was a result of an illegal street race that occurred on Railroad Canyon Road on Sunday morning.

"Ricky Koesy, an 18-year-old from Menifee, engaged in an illeagal street race with Jacob Frederickson, a 19-year-old from Murrieta," Kaas said in a news release. "The vehicles were traveling westbound on Railroad Canyon Road in Lake Elsinore."

During the race, Koesy apparently lost control of his vehicle, Kaas said. He slammed right into a light pole.

A man who was riding as a passenger in Koesy's vehicle, identified as 19-year-old Joseph Paul Castro Jr. of Nevada, died in the crash, according to Kaas.

Kaas said both men were arrested on charges of manslaughter, and Koesy was also arrested on a charge of injury DUI.

"This investigation is ongoing," he said.  "If anyone was a witness or has additional information about this collision, they are encouraged to contact Deputy Nicole Roberge at the Lake Elsinore Police Department at 951-245-3300."
