LAKE ELSINORE, CA — Two contract workers were burned Friday afternoon in a fiery explosion caused by a natural gas leak at Diamond Stadium in Lake Elsinore, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department confirmed.

The mishap was reported at about 4:20 p.m. inside the stadium at 500 Diamond Drive, according to fire department spokesperson Maggie De La Rosa.

Emergency crews treated two victims, and both were transported to Wildomar's Southwest Healthcare Inland Valley Hospital with moderate injuries, De La Rosa said.

The stadium's fire extinguishers were triggered amid the blaze and there was significant water damage to the facility as a result, according to De La Rosa.

In addition to first responders, SoCal Gas technicians were also at the scene.

The Storm was scheduled to face the Inland Empire 66ers Friday night in the fourth game of a six-game series that was to include a "Halfway to Halloween" promotion with Halloween decorations throughout the concourse, balloon artists, face painters, carnival snacks, trick or treating at concession stands.

The game, and another planned for tomorrow, were canceled as a result of the mishap, the Lake Elsinore Storm tweeted.

"While no players were involved, our thoughts and prayers go out to the contracted workers who were injured," according to a statement from the San Diego Padres, the Storm's parent club. "We will be providing assistance to the Storm and those affected by the incident, and we will provide updates on their game schedule when appropriate."

The cause of the leak and subsequent explosion remain under investigation.
