Man Accused Of Robbing Lake Elsinore Store Denies Charges

LAKE ELSINORE, CA — A 30-year-old parolee accused of holding up a Lake Elsinore store and trying unsuccessfully to flee from Riverside County sheriff's deputies pleaded not guilty Tuesday to robbery and other offenses.

Darvone Brice Bogus of San Diego was arrested Thursday after the alleged robbery at a convenience store in the 19000 block of Collier Avenue, just west of Interstate 15.

Along with robbery, Bogus is charged with brandishing a handgun, resisting arrest and being in possession of controlled substances, as well as parole violations.

He was arraigned before Superior Court Judge Stephen Gallon, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for Aug. 6 at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta. The defendant is being held on $130,000 bail at the nearby Byrd Detention Center.

According to sheriff's Sgt. Veronica Amparano, Bogus allegedly went into the store on Collier at 1 p.m. Thursday, forcibly took some items and ran out.

Amparano said the defendant arrived at the location in a stolen vehicle and abandoned it.

Patrol deputies converged on the location after the clerk's 911 call and spotted Bogus running south. The sergeant said the convicted felon was apprehended following a brief struggle. No one was injured.

Amparano said Bogus tried to smuggle illegal drugs into the Murrieta jail after he was taken into custody.

According to court records, the defendant has prior felony convictions in another jurisdiction, but no details were available.
