Andrew Hamilton as Mayor

The July 7, 2015 Council Meeting sheds light on how Hamilton's Mayorship would play out

Over the past few days, I have been discussing the Mayorship of Lake Forest. At Tuesday’s Council Meeting, Scott Voigts will be relinquishing his title and the Council will be electing the new Mayor for 2016. I have been outlining the past performance of Mayors under this current Council.

Andrew Hamilton is currently Mayor Pro Tem, and it would be most logical that he would accept the Mayorship for 2016, as he appears to be next in line. He has not yet been Mayor, however he presided over one meeting on July 7, 2015 in Scott Voigts’ absence that has left a lasting impression on myself and everyone I’ve spoken to who was there. Here’s an outline of some of the things that occurred at that one meeting:

• He apparently violated the Brown Act, and when instructed to stop by the City Attorney, he continued to finish his comments which had already been ruled inappropriate.
• He ordered people not to applaud or express their emotions.
• At one point, he even objected to residents speaking amongst themselves.
• He abruptly demanded that residents stop speaking when their 3 minutes expired.
• At the conclusion of the meeting, he complained about residents and claimed they were “bullying” him.
• Currently being recalled

Please keep in mind that this was just one meeting. Violating the Brown Act seems to be a recurring theme among members of our City Council, and this violation is a criminal offense. The Brown Act protects residents’ 1st amendment rights. For more information on the Brown Act, click here.

Hamilton’s behavior when not in the Mayor’s chair has not been exemplary either. He calls out whenever he wishes, and chastised a resident by name at the last Council meeting. He often whispers with Scott Voigts right in front of everyone, an act that is not merely rude, but may violate the Brown Act as well.

I will follow this article with a synopsis of Dwight Robinson as Mayor, and then I will be discussing the two members of the Council who may not have their opportunity at the Mayorship with the “Gang of 3” in control.
