Daily Dose Of Disney: Churros Recipe To Make Park Treat At Home

We love Disneyland-style churros. This easy recipe proves that you can create the sugary treat without resorting to a frozen box!

ANAHEIM, CA — Disneyland churros are a park favorite for us. As an annual pass holder, I use my in-park discount whenever possible, but there are times that you need a box of popcorn or a paper-wrapped park churro to get you over the hump while waiting for your Rise of the Resistance boarding pass to activate.

*sigh.*

Something about a bite of that cinnamon-sugar dusted delicacy while you're strolling past a barbershop quartet, the Disneyland Band, or pin trading with park workers? It feels right.

Fun fact. Did you know that over 5.5 million Disneyland guests crunch on these delicious, full-sized churros every year?

During the coronavirus shutdown, Patch has pledged to offer a daily dose of Disney, and the park chefs were happy to oblige.

In our opinion, being able to watch how the mixture is made gives you that added Aha! The moment that is so needed when trying a new recipe for the first time. So put on those mouse ears! And set to baking!

Churro Tots Recipe:
You'll need:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 8 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 ½ cups vegetable or canola oil
  • ½ cup of sugar
  • Chocolate sauce of choice

In a 2 quart pot, combine 1 cup of water, 4 ounces of butter, ¼ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon. Bring to a roiling boil.

Add in 1 ¼ cups flour and reduce heat to low. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mix becomes a sticky ball.

Remove from heat, and let your "dough ball" rest for 5 to 7 minutes.

Stir in 1 egg and combine.

Then stir in egg #2 until combined, followed by egg #3. Make sure dough ball is complete.

Fill a portion of the dough into a piping bag tipped with your star tip to get that "churro shape."

But come on, this is coronavirus pandemic shutdown. If you don't have a piping bag with a star tip, gallon storage bag with a corner cut off would do the trick.

Meanwhile, grab a skillet and heat 1 ½ cups of oil to a medium/high temperature, and stir. (should reach about 350 degrees, according to Disney Chefs). Make sure you have tongs, a basket strainer, or something to grab the bites out!

Test a ball of dough, and when it fizzles and bubbles, the oil is hot enough to cook!

Squeeze 1-inch strips of churro dough into the hot oil, and fry until golden.

Drain on a towel and dredge through a bowl of ½ cinnamon and ½ cup sugar! Serve hot!

You can save the dough in the fridge for about a week, and bring out to make as many as needed. We don't recommend freezing.
