Diary of a Charger: She's Quite Sweet on the Sport of Lacrosse

El Toro High School student-athlete Bella Knoth shares her journal entry for the week ending Feb. 15

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

I spent the weekend up in San Jose with my aunt and uncle, who own an amazing candy store, Schurra’s Fine Confections, which I work in every year before Valentine’s Day. I spent my weekend surrounded by truffles and creams, fresh marshmallows and chocolate-dipped strawberries. Talk about temptation!

In case anybody didn’t get the memo, I love lacrosse. Learning new plays, improving my stick work and talking to teammates can keep a smile on my face for a long time. Even late-night conditioning sessions with difficult stairs and sprints will totally pump up my mood. Coming up this weekend, El Toro’s varsity and JV teams will drive to UCSB for the annual Santa Barbara Shootout. This is my first year attending this tournament, and I've heard some major team-bonding will be taking place! In addition to the games, UCSB has a unique facility, one of the country’s largest indoor ropes course, which we will be allowed to use during the weekend. This will also be my first time playing in competitive games as a varsity player, and I'm really nervous. I know I made the team for a reason, but wish me luck anyways!

At school, the big up-and-coming events are the yearly dodgeball tournament and the Air Guitar concert. Dodgeball teams can have eight players, but to keep it interesting, each team must have at least two girls. Games will be played in the quad at snack and lunch in the upcoming weeks. The air guitar doesn’t necessarily involve air guitar; it’s more like groups of students coming up with some cool dance routines to their own music mix, and competing for the title of air guitar champion.

For Valentine’s Day last year, my boyfriend Ryan and I unintentionally got each other blankets. This year, we decided to make it a tradition; he made me a felt tie-blanket covered in frogs, and I made him a flannel and satin blanket decorated with a forest and animals. I hope everyone had a great Valentine’s Day!
