Laguna Woods food drive helps South County Outreach

The community of Laguna Woods is holding its annual food drive benefiting South County Outreach from July 1 to Aug. 15. Residents can drop off nonperishable food donations at the many the collection barrels placed throughout the community.

Last year the event brought in more than 1,200 pounds of food for local people in need. This donation comes at a time when things can be difficult for local families since children do not get free and reduce-priced meals from school during the summer. The food pantry is also in danger of facing short supplies during the months when donations are historically light.

“The community of Laguna Woods has been wonderful in its support of South County Outreach,” said Executive Director Lara Fisher. “In addition to this great annual food drive, we get many of our volunteers from Laguna Woods and we appreciate the generosity of the clubs all year long. This support makes a real difference in the lives of local people facing hard times.”

The South County Outreach collection barrels will be at Clubhouses 1-6, the Fitness Center, the Towers, the Library, the Laguna Woods Globe office and the Community Center.

Most-needed items in the food pantry include peanut butter, canned tuna, canned meat, pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit, cereal, bagged beans and bagged rice.

South County Outreach, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hunger and homeless prevention services to local people in crisis. South County Outreach helps those in need reach self-sufficiency by providing services that include a food pantry, transitional housing to support homeless families, utility and rental assistance, homeless prevention counseling, computer training and clothing.
