Man Suspected of DUI Leads Officers on 95-Minute Chase, Starting from Lake Forest

A man sought for DUI and traffic violations was taken into custody tonight after leading authorities on a 95-minute chase from Lake Forest to Castaic on Interstate 5.

A videographer at the scene said California Highway Patrol officers wrestled the suspect to the ground before two of them escorted him to a CHP cruiser at 11:18 p.m.

The pursuit began in Lake Forest around 9:45 p.m.

The driver was sought for traffic violations and suspected DUI, Orange County Sheriff's Department Lt. Mark Kiernan said.

After a brief pursuit by sheriff's deputies, the suspect drove onto the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, where he was pursued by CHP officers. Apart from a brief detour on Atlantic Boulevard in Commerce, he remained on the freeway for the duration of the chase.

Broadcast footage showed the suspect's black Nissan Maxima holding a steady speed of around 70 mph.

The vehicle slowed briefly in Burbank as construction narrowed the Golden State Freeway to two and three lanes. With a CHP cruiser directly behind him, the driver then accelerated through the closed construction area.

The driver slowed and then stopped after the car drove over a spike strip just south of Castaic Lake. The vehicle was approached by CHP officers three minutes later.

The driver was believed to be the owner of the vehicle, which had not been reported stolen, Kiernan said.

The driver's age was not available.

There was no information about what he would be booked for.

All northbound lanes of Interstate 5 in the vicinity of the conclusion of the chase were closed after it ended. A videographer at the scene estimated the traffic backup at three-to-five miles.
