With the mail-in ballots the June Primary is happening now. Many people don’t know a lot of the candidates, so I thought I would offer my suggestions -
GOP Central Committee
Here are some good ones -

- Jeff Lalloway, Council member, Irvine. I’ve worked with him and think he is solid and clear headed. He was treated shabbily by Irvine Mayor Choi and GOP Head Whitaker so they could take care of their buddy, Dwight Robinson regarding getting him on the AQMD Board of Directors.
- Debra Pauly, former council member, Villa Park. She supported John Moorlach against Don Wagner when nearly every other Republican in the county was supporting Wagner.
- Mark Bucher. Also supported Moorlach, against the OC GOP Establishment.
- Karen Schatzle – Seems to be a good choice; she is also running for Superior Court Judge. She also served in the U.S. Air Force.
- Ken Williams – Appears okay, has spent a lot of years on OC Board of Education
The ones that should NOT be considered are:
1. Scott Voigts – need I say more.

2. Jon Steven Fleischman – reminds me of our Gang of 3
3. Raymond Grangoff – Sheriff Department senior manager, should be ‘nuff said!
4. Fred Whitaker - Friend of the “Gang of 3” and one of writers of the racist Lake Forest News.
5. Nick Wilson - Friend of Voigts.
6. Steven Choi: helped get Lalloway removed from the AQMD.
7. Todd Spitzer – big supporter of County shelter, friend of Voigts and donation supporter.
The rest I know nothing about and their bios did not impress me. Probably just party hacks.
US Representative
My vote will go to Greg Raths, Mayor Pro Tem, Mission Viejo. Greg is a retired Marine Colonel and was subjected to a number of inane accusations by Mimi Walters in the last primary.
The only vote I would give to Walters is to send her on a one-way ticket to anywhere out of California. As noted on Greg’s Website, she doesn’t even live in this district. She and her family recently moved to Laguna Beach!
State Senator
John Moorlach – no reason not to vote for him and I voted for him in the last election
State Assembly
I intend to vote for Debra Pauly: As noted above, she would be a good choice. She also has prior military (Air Force), and, you all know my feelings in this regard.
If you don’t like Pauly, I would say that Kostas Roditis is the next best option. He is at war with the OC GOP Central Committee. He did fail to file his paperwork on time, which is a negative.
The other options:
Sidhu – I’ve never liked the way he manipulates in Anaheim. Sort of a Todd Spitzer type of glad-hander. I would not vote for him.
Choi – Same thing, in the GOP establishment camp; see above about how he removed Lalloway to get Robinson on the AQMD
Ballot Measure A
We know there is a need for a strong ethics commission but this is not it. In my opinion, Shirley Grindle caved on this. She was desperate to get an ethics commission established and gave in to the demands of Spitzer and Nelson. Primarily, this puts the commission in the hands of, and at the mercy of, the Board of Supervisors. That should be enough said. I will be voting against this ballot measure.
Ballot Measure B
I am supporting this measure. It seems to be common sense to know what something is going to cost. Also, supported by Jon Coupal of the HJA organization, and I’ve always found him to be reliable.
I hope these comments are helpful
Col. Tom Cagley served on the Orange County Grand Jury and is on the Lake Forest U.S. Marine Corp Support Committee. He is a fixture at meetings of the City Council and the Planning Commission.
