Ready for Disaster? What You Need for a Basic Home Emergency Kit

Are you ready for any type of disaster? Use these tips from Orange County's "Ready OC" to build your emergency preparedness kit at home.

We call it "the Big One." We notice "earthquake weather," but don't talk much about them. Still,

Living in California, and with recent earthquake swarms and the new fault line discovered east of the Salton Sea, the reality of earthquakes is part of daily life. But will you bury your head in the sand? or be ready to deal with emergencies before they arise?

Ready OC Has offered this list of emergency supplies that every Californian should have at home. How prepared are you? What would you do in case of disaster? Review this checklist and let us know how prepared your family is in case of emergency:

  • Water: One gallon per person, per day for at least three days--use for drinking and sanitation
  • Food: At least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for everyone in your home, and pets
  • Can opener: for food kit
  • Radio: Battery powered or hand crank radio, and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert (batteries for both)
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First Aid Kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust masks, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities such as gas and water lines
  • Paper maps of Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Diego Counties
  • Cell phone with chargers--solar powered chargers
