The Latest Info on a Dog Park for Lake Forest

An off leash place where dogs and their owners can socialize is moving rapidly to fruition thanks to the efforts of the Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC) and the city staff. Last night the PRC reviewed the city’s latest analysis that isolated 9 possible parks where a “dog zone” could be placed. The staff rejected the idea of a full blown “dog park” (3 to 5 acres) after it surveyed all 28 parks in the city. But a smaller “zone” that could be blended into the existing parks was a workable solution in 9 of the parks.

Here’s the 9 parks the city identified:

• Borrego
• Cherry
• Montbury
• Pittsford
• Rancho Serrano
• Regency
• Rimgate
• Tamarisk
• Vintage

In the next few weeks, PRC commissioners will visit each of these parks and judge their suitability on a 5-point scale, and then re-convene on June 20 to compare notes. Some of the criteria being used include:

• How close the zone would be to existing homes
• How adequate is the parking
• What proportion of the park would be taken  up by the zone

Bob Holtzclaw and I surveyed the city parks a few weeks ago and prepared a comprehensive report (available if you want a copy). Our 3 top picks were Borrego Park, Regency Park, and Montbury Park.

If you have your own ideas, please use this blog to post your comments. I’ll be sure that the PRC gets your thoughts.
