Obituaries

Nadine Speck, 82; French teacher and La Mesan for almost half a century

Plus other La Mesans in memoriam: Hester Marie Bacheller, 83.

Nadine Sauvajot Speck’s formative years in World War II-era France were more than just unique—they were of enough historical significance to put her diary from age 16 on view at the Memorial in Caen, Normandy.

After moving “across the pond,” Speck made a happy home in La Mesa with her husband, Roger, for 48 years, raising two children and later doting on five grandchildren.

Speck died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at the age of 82.

While her family was her joy and writing her passion, her “raison d’etre” was teaching French for 56 years, according to family.

A mass for Speck was held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in El Cajon, followed by a reception in the hall.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to San Diego Hospice in memory of Nadine Speck.
