My very first was quaffed at the old Cadillac Bar and Grill, appropriately situated in SOMA SF under the freeway, beneath bustling Bay Bridge traffic with hopped up Latin waiters jumping on the bar counter, shouting Happy Birthday with a heavy accent. That was a different era when a dance spot called DNA defined bleeding edge nightclubs at Ninth and Folsom, long before the acid jazz hang out across the street burned down.
For two servings: simply add half a shot (or dose for DNA speak) of grand marnier and contreau to your mix with an equal part of tequila. The drink improves with an icecream scoop serving of frozen bacardi lime concentrate (remember for next safeway delivery), squeeze of fresh lime and sprinkle of real margarita salt inside the proper wide-mouth stemware and also along the rim - after you grease it with fresh lime, of course, so it sticks.
Your concoction will need a splash of water to offset the concentrate and a squirt of agave nectar never hurts, then set the phone to vibrate and crank the chill on Pandora.
