Saint Mary's College Presents Stephanie Coontz

Saint Mary's College will host  Stephanie Coontz: Celebrating 40 Years of Women at Saint Mary's

What: Author Stephanie Coontz will be on campus to discuss her recent book, Strange Stirrings: The Feminine Mystique and American Women at the Dawn of the 1960s. We may have come a long way, but the White House’s comprehensive statistical report just released on “Women in America: Indicators of Social and Economic Well-Being” – the first assessment since 1963 – shows that women still earn less on average than men and are more likely to live in poverty, are at much greater risk of sexual assault and violence at the hands of an intimate partner.

About The Author: Stephanie Coontz teaches history and family studies at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and is Director of Research and Public Education for the Council on Contemporary Families, which she chaired from 2001-04. Coontz is the author of Marriage, A History: How Love Conquered Marriage (Viking Press, 2005). She also wrote The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap (1992 and 2000, Basic Books), The Way We Really Are: Coming to Terms with America's Changing Families (Basic Books, 1997), and The Social Origins of Private Life: A History of American Families. She edited American Families: A Multicultural Reader (Routledge, 2008).
