Science Cafe - Breaking Trail: Mountains to Molecules to Motherhood

Sip a glass of wine or cup of coffee and hear Arlene Blum, author, mountaineer, and biophysical chemist talk about treks, tenacity, and toxic chemicals.

Dr. Blum will share photos and stories from her work to eliminate toxins in consumer products, as well as from her expeditions to the world's highest and most dangerous mountains (she was the first woman to attempt Mt. Everest). In the 1970's, after organizing the first women's team to climb Annapurna in the Himalayas, Blum turned her attention to eliminating cancer-causing chemicals from children's sleepwear and ultimately brought science into regulatory decisions, stopping the unnecessary use of hundreds of millions of pounds of toxic chemicals. Her current challenge is bringing scientists, industry, government, and non-profits together to create a healthier, safer environment.
