Drewry won't pass on shooting in All-Star Game
Redwood's leader in assists this past season has given himself the green light in the annual showcase because of the presence of the human ball retriever, San Marin star Stuart Wesonga.

became one of the Marin County Athletic League’s top ball distributors this past season, and Saturday night he’ll be surrounded by a cast of high-scoring All-Stars.
So there’s no doubt in Drewry’s mind what he’s going to be doing a lot in the Jerry McIntosh Marin All-Star Classic at Drake High.

Why? Well, two words: Stuart Wesonga.
“I’m looking forward to playing with him,” Drewry said of the 6-foot-7 San Marin High star. “He makes things so much easier.

“You can play so much more aggressively on defense because he’s there to protect you. And then there are a lot of shots you might not ordinarily take, but you take them because you know he’ll get the rebound if you miss.
“Yeah, that’s the game plan.”
The 6-foot-4 Drewry averaged 11.2 points and a team-leading 2.7 assists for last season. That, plus a stellar AAU career, earned him an invitation to play for Whitman College in Washington next season.
The Whitman coach has told Drewry he wants him ready to play big minutes as a freshman, so the Redwood standout claims he’s “probably in the best shape of my life” for Saturday’s off-season affair, in which he will be joined by Giants teammate .
“It should be a lot of fun — up and down. That’s the way Coach (Craig) Pitti wants it to be,” he said.
“There’s nothing left for me to prove. I had a great time at Redwood. Redwood’s success speaks for itself.”
The pinnacle of that success came in Drewry’s junior season. He calls it the highlight of his prep career.
“Definitely winning the NCS championship against Pinole Valley,” he said of the 2010 championship. “Cutting down the nets at Redwood. The fans storming the court … It’s something I will always remember.”
Giants coach will remember Drewry as a great teammate, a guy who “learned how to make other players around him better.”
“He has the potential to be a very good college player if he works on his perimeter shooting and gets stronger,” the coach assessed. “He is quick enough to defend at the next level and has a superior vertical leap which allows him to play above the rim. I know he will work hard because he loves the game.”
Drewry plans to get a head-start on that perimeter-shooting work Saturday night. Thank you, Stuart Wesonga.
