Larkspur-Corte Madera Weekend Planner August 12-14

From stories of Iran and a discussion with actor- travel writer Andrew McCarthy to the Food and Wine Festival at Falkirk Cultural Center and the Artful Codgers at the Piccolo Pavilion, we've got you covered this weekend.

Friday:

Roger Housden discusses his new book Saved by Beauty: Adventures of An American Romantic in Iran. Housden traveled to Iran to meet with artists, writers, filmmakers, and religious scholars who embody the long Iranian tradition of humanism, scholarship, and artistry. He weaves a richly textured story of a culture that has endured for over 3,000 years.

If you go: Tickets are $10, and free for Conference attendees. The discussion begins at 8 p.m. at the , 51 Tamal Vista Blvd. in Corte Madera.

Join for their summer movie series for families.  Today’s film is STATION JIM (2001), the story of a young porter at a London railway station who discovers a stray Jack Russell Terrier. "Station Jim" becomes a local attraction - romance, mystery and drama ensue.

If you go: Tickets are $5, while kids 2 and under are free.  The show  begins at 11 a.m. at the , 549 Magnolia Avenue in Larkspur.

 

Saturday:

Actor, director, and travel writer Andrew McCarthy is a two-time Lowell Thomas Award winner, including being named the SATW Foundation 2010 Travel Journalist of the Year. He has twice been cited for “notable” work in the Best American Travel series, and is a contributing editor at National Geographic Traveler. His travel writing has also appeared in Travel+Leisure, Afar, Men’s Journal, Islands, National Geographic Adventure.

If you go: $10—free for Conference attendees. The discussion begins at  8 p.m. at the , 51 Tamal Vista Blvd., in Corte Madera.

 

Saturday:

San Rafael's Food & Wine Festival will feature wine tasting from regional wineries, beer tasting from local breweries, and local restaurants serving up some of the best cuisine in Marin County. The Festival will also showcase local artists and musicians playing jazz and classical music.  Additionally, festival-goers can enjoy food from area restaurants and sample wines from twenty five of the region’s outstanding boutique wineries. Chef demonstrations will also be held featuring a number of local restaurants.

If you go: Admission to the event is free. The tasting program will work as follows: Option #1, attendees can purchase an all day food and wine tasting for $25 and they will receive a wristband and a tasting glass.  Option #2, attendees can purchase an all day food tasting for $15 and they will receive a wristband.  We will also have a beverage booth on-site where attendees can purchase individual beverages.To purchase sampling tickets prior to the event, please go to the event website by clicking here. Tickets will also be available onsite the day of the event. The festival is from noon to 6 p.m. at the Falkirk Cultural Center, 1408 Mission Avenue in San Rafael.

 

Sunday:

The Artful Codgers is a swinging little band with its musical roots in the 1940 and 1950s, playing great jazz and swing rhythms. They represent a whole lot of experience and talent,; each one of them has played in places that run the gamut from North Beach dives and ball-parks to luxury hotels and cruise ships. Bring your family and friends to enjoy some of The Artful Codgers' sweet music in the little park at the bottom of the hill.

If you go: The music flows today at 5 p.m. at the Piccolo Pavilion, Tamalpais Dr & Redwood Avenue in Corte Madera.
