Marin Water Customers Will See Fees For Overuse: Report
Customers will be charged $5-15 for every 100 cubic feet of water (748 gallons) over a certain limit. The penalties go into effect Dec. 1.
SAN RAFAEL, CA—The Marin Municipal Water District will begin issuing penalties for excessive use of water in December in an effort to reduce water waste, according to a report.
The water district board voted unanimously to approve these penalties Tuesday, the Marin Independent Journal reports. The ordinance takes effect December 1, which means customers could begin seeing penalties in February.
Customers will be charged $5-15 for every 100 cubic feet of water (748 gallons) over a certain limit.

Limits are different in the winter and summer billing cycles, according to the ordinance. Residential and commercial accounts are also considered differently under the ordinance.
The board had issued a water shortage emergency on April 20, 2021 due to current drought conditions and low levels of water in the storage reservoirs.
