NOVATO, CA – The Conservation Corps North Bay has added a Marin County collection site now accepting -- for free -- old mattresses and box springs from the public, as part of the Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress Program program.

The Conservation Corps’ Marin site, at 11 Pimentel Court in Bel Marin Keys in Novato, will be open on Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with staff will be on hand to assist with offloading mattresses from vehicles.

“CCNB is thrilled to become the first, permanent, free mattress-collection site in Marin County,” said CCNB’s Recycling Program Coordinator Kyle LaRue. “We began providing Marin residents with free mattress-recycling, drop-off events in July 2018 and quickly discovered the public need for a more consistent solution to this problem. This partnership will allow us to serve our community, the environment and the youth we employ in an even greater capacity.”

Mattresses recycled through the Bye Bye Mattress Program are broken up into four main components – steel, foam, wood and fibers, which then are used to make such new products as carpet padding, steel products, filters and automotive insulation, according to officials.

"In fact, up to 80 percent of a mattress’ parts can be recycled, alleviating stress on the environment, creating new jobs and new products," the agency said.

Bye Bye Mattress is administered by the Mattress Recycling Council, a non-profit created by the mattress industry in response to a 2013 state law and funded through a $10.50 recycling fee that is collected when a mattress or box spring is sold in California. By creating a network of no-cost collection locations and events, the program aims to deter illegal dumping.

“This program keeps more than 1 million mattresses from going to landfills in California each year,” said Mike O’Donnell, Mattress Recycling Council managing director.
