Charles was a heroic environmentalist and an avid bicyclist. We'll meet on Friday, on the lawn in front of the post office on North San Pedro Road near the Civic Center and head south on bicycle Route 5, making stops along the way to talk about Charles' work on SMART, the Cal Park Tunnel, the Pilot Program and the Alto Tunnel. The ride will end at Wilderness Travel Bike's Mill Valley office at 475 Miller Avenue for refreshments and reflections. Please wear helmets for the ride.

Shinoda Bolen and Isabel Allende discuss Bolen’s new work Like A Tree: How Trees, Women and Tree People Can Save the Planet. Bolen’s inspiring new work is poetic, educational, and spiritual. But it is also quite down-to-earth, looking at the anatomy and physiology of trees, as well as trees as archetypal and sacred symbols. Her new book is a strong and positive call to ecological activism, with stories of organizations and “tree people” who are trying to save our forests and the planet. She writes eloquently about deforestation, global warming, and overpopulation.
If you go: This interesting discussion begins at 6 p.m. at the Book Passage, 52 Tamal Vista Blvd., Corte Madera. The cost is $50 and includes small plate appetizers, wine, and an autographed copy of the book. (415) 927-0960, ext. 1.
Saturday:
On Opening Night of the 2008–09 season, Renée Fleming dazzled audiences when she sang the final scene of Strauss’s wise and worldly meditation on art and life.
