Memorial Viewing Details: 1st Of 2 Funeral Motorcades Underway For Slain S.D. Officer

SAN DIEGO – Hundreds of law enforcement vehicles were on the streets this morning as the first of two funeral processions for slain San Diego police officer Jonathan "J.D." DeGuzman got underway.

The contingent of motorcycles, police cruisers and other vehicles headed from Mission Valley to Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon, where a midday memorial ceremony is planned.

News video from the scene showed firefighters, onlookers and well-wishers lining the streets and on bridges overhead as the procession passed by.

The ceremonial motorcade for DeGuzman began shortly after 9 a.m. and prompted the closure of eastbound Interstate 8 from Interstate 15 to Greenfield Drive. Freeway connectors and onramps along the freeways also will be closed until the procession has passed, according to Caltrans.

State transit officials said motorists can expect delays lasting between 15 and 30 minutes.

Following the public memorial service, to Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, where then fallen officer will be laid to rest. The motorcade will proceed west on Interstate 8 from Greenfield Drive to southbound state Route 125 to westbound state Route 54. Caltrans officials said those roadways would be closed for about an hour, beginning around 1 p.m.

Signs will be posted at various highway locations alerting motorists to use alternate routes.

DeGuzman, 43, was gunned down July 28 during a pedestrian stop in Southcrest. His gang-unit partner, Officer Wade Irwin, 32, suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound.
