FURY FALL IN FINAL

Livermore based team ends season ranked #2 in NorCal

(Modesto) West Coast Fury girls ended the 2014/15 soccer season with a 3-2 golden goal overtime loss to Placer United in the U-12 State Cup final at Modesto this past Saturday. Fury was playing in their first ever State Cup Championship game and despite the loss, West Coast finished the season with an overall record of 39-6-3. The past two years Fury has a combined record of 81-13-7. The Livermore based team has now been to the championship game of all four major tournaments in Northern California; winning everyone except Saturday’s State Cup final.

Placer United opened the scoring of the championship contest in the 15th minute finding net off a corner kick. The 1-0 advantage extended to the break. In the second half, Fury equalized when Bella Romero hit a right footed volley that beat the Placer goalie. With 11 minutes remaining, Kelena Brongiel received a pass on the left side, spun with a dribble to the middle and hit a 20-yard shot that went far post and gave West Coast the 2-1 lead. However 4 minutes later, Placer tied the score and that’s the way the match ended at the conclusion of regular time.

Placer United wasted little time in the extra session scoring a golden goal within the first minute. The goal ended the match and gave Placer United the State Cup title; Placer lost in the championship last year. Fury ends the season as the #2 ranked team in Northern California.

Fury Coach Ray Canevari said, “I have too hand it to Placer United; they were the better team today. They deserved the victory; they outplayed us on this day. Coach Canevari added, “I can’t tell you how proud I am of my team! I absolutely love these kids and what they’ve accomplished the past two years is amazing. I cant think of another team I’d rather coach!”

Fury ended the season on quite a run and Saturday’s loss was only the second since August 9th. Coach Canevari ended by saying “The success of this team comes from many places; West Coast Director of Coaching Troy Dayak for believing I could get this team to the next level, our awesome manager Laurie Brongiel who keeps us and mostly me organized, our marvelous fitness coaches LeeAnn and Tony Alfonzo who don’t get enough credit for their contributions, a dedicated group of parents who are committed to the program and the best 12-year-old girls in the world!”
