Girls Golf: Granada Falls Short of State
The Matadors are on the outside looking in with a fifth-place finish in the Northern California Championships.
The girls golf team finished fifth in the Northern California Championships at the Stockton Golf and Country Club on Monday with a 452, but failed to advance to the state championships in Southern California next week.
Alameda took the title with a 419. St. Francis trailed in second with a 426 and Amador Valley shot a 443 to edge out fourth place St. Ignatius' 446. The top three teams advanced.
"Most of the mistakes I saw were mental," Matadors coach Tim Rankin said. "We really didn't have our short game today. I don't think we can ever shoot better than we did in NCS."

Marguerite Swearingen led Granada with an 83. Stephanie Herbert and Yuri Ahn shot 91s.
Rankin said Monday's performance was a polar opposite of how his team usually performs.

"I don't think it was pressure or anything. We keep things really low key in our program. It was one of those days where the girls are snowballing and it's just the way it is," he said.
Amador advanced to the tournament for only the second time since 2004.
"It's really good for Amador. They deserved it," Rankin said. "They were the best team all year in league."
He wasn't too disappointed with his team's result.
"To say our school finished in the top five in Nor Cal for a school of our stature is not too shabby," Rankin said.
