MEN’S SOCCER

The Las Positas men’s squad received the 16th seed for the NorCal regional playoffs and will travel to No. 1 Fresno City on Saturday for the first round.

The Hawks (10-7-3, 7-4-1 Coast-North) finished the regular season with some tough road games against heavy hitters, and battled some injuries, but they’re still standing.

“We were able to ride through that difficult time and stayed within the top 16 in the North,” Hawks coach Andy Cumbo says. “We are thrilled to make it to the second season of 2018, and we drew a favorable opponent too.”

Indeed, the Hawks and Rams battled to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 7 in Fresno. Oscar Munoz scored for Las Positas in the 25th minute, but Fresno tied it in the 90th minute on a goal by Angel Alvarado.

“They are a great program, reigning State Champion and it should be a tough game,” Cumbo said of Fresno City. “We’ve been resilient and now we’ve got a tank full of gas.”

The Hawks haven’t played since a 2-1 loss at Hartnell on Nov. 6. Las Positas’ scheduled game against Skyline was cancelled due to poor air quality.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Hawks (13-3-3) will open the North Regional playoffs as the No. 6 seed and will host No. 11 Hartnell (14-7-1) on Saturday.

The contest will be a quick rematch as Hartnell took a 2-1 win over Las Positas in Salinas on Nov. 6. Paola Samaniego scored for the Hawks in the 52nd minute off a Lauren Sisneros assist, tying it 1-1. But Hartnell’s Belinda Ascencio scored the winner in the 71st minute.

Ascencio leads Hartnell in scoring with 15 goals and 13 assists to rank 23rd in the state. Meghan Giamona paces the balanced Hawks with 12 goals and 11 assists.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

After taking third place in the Coast Conference, the No. 7 seed Las Positas women’s team fell 11-4 to No. 2 seed San Joaquin Delta in the NorCal Regional Championships on Friday.

Negin Tehranian Torghabeh, a sophomore out of Foothill High, paced Las Positas with a pair of goals.

The Hawks finished 10-10 overall and a very strong 7-3 in conference.
