Petition Started In Effort To Save Beloved Sunset Park Tree
A Livermore resident is asking the city council to prune the tree instead of totally removing it.
LIVERMORE, CA — A community effort is underway in an attempt to save a mature oak tree tree growing in Sunset Park in Livermore. Resident Nischal Belthangady recently started a petition asking the city council to save the beloved tree. The petition has garnered 114 signatures since it was launched.
“I have created a change.org petition to city officials to follow the recommendations in the arborist's report that the city had ordered and prune the tree instead of cutting it down,” Belthangady said via email.
Livermore Area Recreation and Park District officials recently said the massive tree may need to be removed or substantially pruned in order to keep park visitors safe. Park district officials said a section of the tree, which is being assessed for a second time, has been supported by a pole for many years.

If officials decide to remove the tree, the healthy parts will be salvaged for use as benches and new trees would be planted to replace the oak. The beehives in the tree will also be safely moved to another location. Click here to view the petition.
