📰 News we're reading

1. Jet Skier Found Alive Miles Offshore After Night Missing In Ocean Off Long Beach (patch.com) — Long Beach emergency crews and the U.S. Coast Guard spent the night searching offshore after a 53-year-old jet skier fell into the ocean east of Queen's Gate and went missing. He was found alive late Monday morning, while a woman who also fell in was rescued overnight near the breakwater and taken to a hospital. Multiple Long Beach fire boats, lifeguards, LAPD boats, and a Coast Guard helicopter joined the extensive search.

2. Lineage fire runoff hits Long Beach (thelalocal.org) — Toxic runoff from a massive Boyle Heights warehouse fire likely flowed down the LA River into Long Beach, yet residents never received a clear warning about potential chemical or metal contamination in local waterways. City beaches only posted bacteria advisories, prompting Long Beach councilmembers to demand a new regional alert system so swimmers, boaters, and anglers get faster, fuller safety information.

3. Homeless man gets 100 years to life for killing in North Long Beach encampment (presstelegram.com) — A man has been sentenced to 100 years to life in prison for fatally shooting another man at a North Long Beach homeless encampment along Cherry Avenue in October 2025. Jurors heard testimony that the killing appeared to be a case of mistaken identity, with witnesses recalling a brief exchange in the dark before the single gunshot.

4. Airports See 1.7% Decline (labusinessjournal.com) — Passenger traffic at Long Beach Airport has dropped about 9% so far this year, with June alone seeing a nearly 14% plunge despite the World Cup. Southwest's route cuts and policy changes are a big factor, but new Alaska and Southwest flights later this year could help rebuild options for Long Beach travelers and the local airport economy.

5. A happy and savory sixth anniversary to Long Beach Burger Week (nbclosangeles.com) — Burger lovers in Long Beach can look forward to Long Beach Burger Week's sixth edition, running Sept. 13–20, 2026 with deals starting at $5. Dozens of local spots like Jimmy E's, Altar Society Brewing, The Kroft, and Parkers' Lighthouse will offer creative burgers, combos, and even pup-friendly options for dine-in or takeout.
