Living History: Long Beach Resident & Freedom Rider Peggy Preacely Shares Story of Resistance

Did you know one of the original Freedom Riders lives right here in Long Beach?
This past Sunday, First Congregational Church of Long Beach hosted a powerful presentation by resident Peggy Trotter Dammond Preacely. Peggy is a civil rights legend who was jailed in the 1960s for her work with SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and the Freedom Rides.
She shared the incredible 200-year history of her family, starting with her ancestors William and Ellen Craft, who famously escaped slavery in 1848 with a daring disguise.
I had the honor of recording her presentation to preserve this local history. It is a must-watch for Black History Month, especially for Long Beach students and history buffs.
