📰 News we're reading

1. Irvine Man Arrested In Fatal Long Beach PCH Hit-And-Run: Reports (patch.com) — Long Beach police arrested a 23-year-old Irvine man on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter after a man using a wheelchair was fatally struck in a marked crosswalk at Pacific Coast Highway and East Seventh Street. Investigators say speed, distraction and impairment do not appear to be factors, and they're asking anyone who witnessed the early-morning collision to contact Long Beach detectives or LA Crime Stoppers.

2. Long Beach police write dozens of tickets to late-night pickleballers (lbpost.com) — Long Beach police issued 40 citations to late-night pickleball players at DeForest Park this week, responding to complaints about loud activity after hours. Neighbors are split, with some backing enforcement of park rules and others questioning whether sending roughly 20 officers was an excessive response given the usually quiet, well-lit courts.

3. Long Beach takes next step in establishing Historically Black Cultural District (presstelegram.com) — Long Beach's City Council has approved a $300,000, two‑year feasibility study to create a Historically Black Cultural District in Central Long Beach, centered around District 6. The project aims to preserve Black history, support Black-owned businesses, and establish a destination area by 2028, funded through Elevate '28 Measure A infrastructure dollars.

4. Snap is betting $3.5 billion on AR glasses that businesses can use as CEO Evan Spiegel sees a post-smartphone era (time.news) — Snap has chosen Long Beach as the stage for unveiling its $2,195 Specs augmented-reality glasses at the Augmented World Expo, signaling a big bet on life beyond smartphones. The fall-shipping device targets early adopters and businesses, while skeptical investors question the more than $3.5 billion already poured into the project, putting added spotlight on Long Beach's growing role in the tech and AR scene.

5. Miami CB commit Donte Wright starts at QB in Long Beach Poly's loss to Inglewood at SoFi Stadium (presstelegram.com) — Long Beach Poly's football team, led at quarterback by Miami-bound cornerback Donte Wright Jr., fell 36–10 to Inglewood in a nonleague game at SoFi Stadium. Despite injuries and a four-game losing streak, players and coaches say they're using the experience to regroup before facing Rancho Cucamonga and then starting Moore League play against Lakewood.
