West Nile Cases Surge To 21 In Long Beach, 2nd-Highest Total On Record (patch.com) — Long Beach health officials report 21 West Nile virus cases so far this year, the city's second-highest total on record and a sharp jump from recent years. With most patients experiencing serious neuroinvasive illness and hospitalizations, residents are urged to use insect repellent, eliminate standing water, and contact Long Beach Vector Control if they notice mosquito problems or dead birds.
   

2. 33-Year-Old Long Beach Man Found Dead With 'Suspicious Injuries' (patch.com) — Long Beach police are investigating the death of 33-year-old resident Kenneth Shannon as a homicide after he was found with suspicious injuries on Muriel Avenue. Detectives say the suspect or suspects fled before officers arrived and are asking anyone with information to contact LBPD Homicide or submit anonymous tips to LA Crime Stoppers.
   

3. Acapulco Restaurant & Cantina Shrinks From 40 Locations To Just One Surviving Site (foreignpolicyjournal.com) — Long Beach now hosts the last surviving Acapulco Restaurant & Cantina, at 6270 Pacific Coast Highway, after the once-large Mexican chain shrank from 40 locations to just this single site. Years of financial trouble, bankruptcies, and shifting dining habits drove widespread closures. The current owner has not said whether the Long Beach restaurant will be revived or eventually shuttered.
   

4. Ándale! Vida Latina returns to Long Beach libraries from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31 (sigtrib.com) — Long Beach residents can dive into the Vida Latina celebration at local library branches from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31, with free events highlighting Latin American culture. Expect live music, dance workshops, bilingual storytimes, Día de los Muertos crafts, and a big closing night at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, all designed to help neighbors "light up" their lives together.
   

5. Long Beach Wilson loses to Huntington Beach on night its celebrates 100 years (presstelegram.com) — Wilson High in Long Beach marked its 100th birthday with a special nonleague football game against Huntington Beach, the same opponent from its first varsity matchup, but fell 31-6. Despite the loss, a strong second-half showing by sophomore quarterback Aiden Caro and standout receiver Kyle Harris offered hopeful signs as the Bruins push through a tough early schedule.
