Sleeping Man Shot Near Cesar E. Chavez Park

A man experiencing homelessness was shot early Thursday morning while sleeping in his car near Cesar E. Chavez Park, authorities said.

LONG BEACH, CA — A man experiencing homelessness was shot early Thursday morning while sleeping in his car near Cesar E. Chavez Park, authorities said.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers received a report of a shooting at about 3:31 in the 400 block of Golden Avenue. Police said the man was sleeping when an unknown suspect fired inside his car multiple times and struck him in the lower body.

The man was taken to a local hospital to treat non-fatal gunshot wounds.

Police said the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. Investigators are still working to find the suspect's identity and discover the motive for the shooting, authorities said.
