2 Killed In Catalina Island Plane Crash

Two people were killed in a plane crash on Catalina Island Thursday.

Two people were killed Thursday in a plane crash on Catalina Island, according to Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn.

The plane went down at around 12:30 p.m. in a remote area on the south side of the island. Both people on board were killed, Hahn said.

ABC 7 reported the plane was an Airplane Factory Sling, a light two-seater aircraft that uses a propeller.

"Paramedics who were first to reach the site confirmed both individuals aboard the aircraft were deceased," she said.

The plane crashed on the opposite coast of the island from Avalon, Catalina's largest settlement. The crash occurred on land stewarded by the Catalina Island Conservancy, near Divide Road, according to the organization.

First responders located the plane in a ravine, KTLA reported.

There's no immediate word on the cause of the crash or where the plane was traveling.

The cause of the crash will be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration, Hahn said.

Nearby roads and hiking trails were closed Thursday amid the investigation into the crash, according to the Catalina Island Conservancy.
