Baby Survives Shooting That Killed His Parents

A young couple was slain and their orphaned baby wounded by gunfire in Harbor City. Police are searching for the killer and the motive.

HARBOR CITY, CA — As the Harbor City community held a vigil Tuesday night for a young couple shot to death, leaving their one-year-old son orphaned and suffering from a bullet wound, police continued to search for the killer Tuesday.

The couple was shot to death while siting in their parked car Monday just after 6:30 p.m. in the area of 1018 253rd St. Their baby, who was strapped into a carseat was also shot, but is expected to survive. Authorities on Tuesday identified the slain couple as 21-year-old Carlos Loera and 18-year-old Ashley Guzman. The pair were slain while parked outside Loera's home, NBC reported.

Police believe their killer approached the vehicle and fired several gunshots, killing Loera at the scene. Guzman was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died, according to Los Angeles Police Department. Their baby boy was taken to a hospital, treated and then released to family, police said.

Authorities working to determine a motive for the slaying were looking into the possibility that the shooting was gang-related. The seemingly random attack on a young family rattled the community.

"Whoever did this it's just a senseless act, how can you do that to a family, it's just not fair," one neighbor told NBC Los Angeles.
