In person: filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson
Born in Mansfield, Ohio, and now living and working in Charlottesville, Virginia, Kevin Jerome Everson is the Commonwealth and Ruffin Foundation Distinguished Professor of Studio Art, Director of Studio Arts, University of Virginia. Everson's art practice encompasses printmaking, sculpture, photography, and film, including 13 features and more than 300 solo and collaborative shorts.
Across these 10 short films, which represent just a fraction of 20 years of cinematic output and exploration, Everson’s persistent interest in looking is interwoven with his unmatched sense of musicality. From revisiting film history at an Ohio drive-in (Double Feature at the Sunset Drive-In, 2024) to reclaiming a dismantled memorial (The I and S of Lives, 2021), Everson “creates a wide array of distilled interpretations of... aspects of Black life in the USA, in part producing an archive of lived experiences that have been erased in dominant culture” (Adam Hyman). This program looks to the sky to imagine life far beyond our own (IFO, 2017) as well as existences just within reach (The Wood Thrush and the Bobwhite Quail, 2025), building a bridge between the visual and sonic experiences of being present, “eras[ing] the line between staging and verité” (Hyman).
