LOS ANGELES, CA – Cooper Hefner, son of the late Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, announced Monday he has launched an exploratory campaign to run for the California Senate's 30th District.

In a video posted to his Twitter account, Hefner said his experience growing up in Los Angeles has defined his values.

"Our cultural diversity, free thinking and creativity is the heart and soul of California," he said in the video.

Incumbent Democrat Holly Mitchell, who has held the seat since 2013, announced earlier this year she will be running to serve as County Supervisor for the 2nd District. If Mitchell wins in November, a special election will be called in early 2021, according to CNN. If she loses, the election will be held in 2022.

California's 30th District encompasses most of downtown and south Los Angeles as well as Inglewood and Westside.

"The time I have spent leading the classroom, working as a corporate officer, engaging in non profit work and serving my country as an airman in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in the has given me the skills and experience needed to deliver a brighter future for our communities," Hefner said in the video.
