LOS ANGELES, CA — Los Angeles health officials are warning swimmers to stay out of the ocean this week due to increased bacteria levels from rainwater, according to the County of Los Angeles Public Health.

The Ocean Water Quality Rain Advisory will last at least until 3 p.m. Thursday, according to the department.

The County of Los Angeles Public Health added that bacteria levels can increase significantly for up to three days after rainstorms due to runoff from land that enters the ocean.

These elevated levels may cause illness, especially in children and the elderly, the department said, adding that beachgoers are also advised to avoid flowing storm drains, creeks, and rivers.
