LA-Based Cinematographer Shot By Alec Baldwin On Set: NM Sheriff

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office said director of photography Halyna Hutchins, 42, died at University of New Mexico Hospital Thursday.

SANTA FE, NM — A Los Angeles-based cinematographer is dead and a director is injured after actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop firearm on a movie set in New Mexico, authorities say.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office said director of photography Halyna Hutchins, 42, died at University of New Mexico Hospital after being shot on the set of the movie "Rust." Hutchins, a native of Ukraine, was a Los Angeles-based cinematographer. She worked on the films "Archenemy," "Blindfire," and "Darlin'," according to her website.

The movie's director, 48-year-old Joel Souza, was also shot and is in the hospital, the sheriff's office said. Souza is based in the Bay Area.

Baldwin is a producer on the movie as well as an actor. The sheriff's office said a 911 caller reported a shooting on the set of the movie, which is being filmed at Bonanza Creek Ranch.

No charges have been filed in the incident.

Director Adam Egypt Mortimer, who worked with Hutchins on "Archenemy," said she was "a brilliant talent who was absolutely committed to art and to film" in a Twitter post.

"I was lucky to have known her and to have worked with her," Mortimer said.
