LA County Sheriff's Deputy Killed By Police On Fontana Golf Course

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident, police said.

FONTANA, CA — An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed by police on a golf course in Fontana, authorities said.

Alejandro Diaz, 45, of Fontana, was the target of a “lethal force encounter” involving Fontana police, according to the sheriff’s department, which said the incident occurred around 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Sierra Lakes Golf Club and that Diaz died at a hospital.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the case.

The situation began with a dispute at a home nearby, according to KTLA, which reported Diaz was drinking and shot at a wall before carrying two guns to the golf course and firing shots.

When police arrived, Diaz raised a gun at the officers, and multiple officers fired weapons, NBC 4 reported.

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is deeply saddened to hear of the tragic shooting incident involving our off-duty deputy who passed away yesterday,” officials said in a statement published by multiple outlets.

“We are in close communication with Fontana Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department as they conduct their ongoing investigation. This incident is extremely difficult for the family, our personnel, and the officers involved.”
