LA Sheriff's Department Mourns Passing Of Top Detective

LOS ANGELES, CA — Lt. John Corina, a veteran homicide investigator and supervisor in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, has died, authorities said Friday.

Corina, 58, died on Thursday, according to the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

"A beloved member of the LASD family passed away surrounded by family, friends and colleagues," a sheriff's department statement said.

Corina, a 36-year veteran of the department, had served at the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau both as an investigator and leading a team of detectives for nearly 15 years.

"John Corina was a tenacious investigator, a tremendous supervisor and an icon at Sheriff's Homicide," sheriff's Capt. Kent Wegener said.

"He was also a man of great character who led by example, a consummate professional," Wegener said. "The Bureau, the Department and the entire community have suffered a great loss with his passing, as he touched many lives with his service. He will be sorely missed."

According to NBC4, Corina had planned to retire this year, and his death followed a brief illness. In recent years, Corina managed the re- investigation of the 1981 death of actress Natalie Wood and the murder of Whittier police Officer Keith Boyer.

Funeral arrangements were pending.
