LAUSD Aide Denies Solis Learning Academy Student's Sexual Abuse Claims

The suit alleges the victim was 14 years old and the abuser was 28 when the alleged abuses began during the 2023-24 school year.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A man has denied a 17-year-old accuser's allegations in a lawsuit that he sexually abused her while he worked as a Los Angeles Unified aide.

The plaintiff is identified only as Jane Doe in the Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit that alleges sexual abuse and battery of a minor, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent hiring, supervision and retention, negligent failure to warn, train or educate and negligent supervision of a minor. The suit also names as a co-defendant former LAUSD instructional aide Michael Cano.

In a one-page document filed Friday with Judge Christopher K. Lui, Cano checked a box that stated he denied all of Doe's allegations. Cano is representing himself.

According to Doe's suit, she attended Hilda L. Solis Learning Academy, an LAUSD high school on Humphreys Avenue. The suit alleges she was 14 years old and Cano 28 when the alleged abuses began during the 2023-24 school year. Cano paid extra attention to Doe, complimenting her on her appearance and intellect while working closely with her in her math class and looking to find her during and after school, the suit further states.

Cano took advantage of Jane Doe's fragile mental state during a particularly vulnerable time and shared personal information with her about his personal life, sex life and other private matters, the suit states.

The grooming and isolation occurred on campus, in front of other employees and students, according to the suit, which further alleges that by spring 2024 Cano began sexually abusing Doe more intimately both on and off the school site, ending at the conclusion of the 2023-24 school year when Doe was 15.

Cano pleaded no contest in February of this year to two felony counts related to his alleged sexual abuse of Doe, according to the complaint.

The suit filed Dec. 10 alleges the LAUSD ignored red flag warnings of Cano's alleged inappropriate behavior with Doe, allowing him to "continue, unhindered, in his predatory conduct."
