Record Heat Bakes Los Angeles, But Rain Is In Store

LOS ANGELES, CA — This is the first week of spring, but it feels like the dog days of summer with record heat blanketing the region.

Burbank broke a 69-year-old heat record for the day Wednesday when the high temperature reached 89 degrees, and LAX tied the record set in 2008 with a high of 84 degrees, the National Weather Service announced. The hot weather is expected to last through Saturday, but the record-setting trend may have peaked Wednesday, the weather service said. After Saturday, temperatures are expected to drop as a storm brings a chance of rain early next week.

Wednesday was the second day of record-setting heat in Los Angeles. On Tuesday, Hollywood Burbank Airport reached 86 degrees, tying a record for that date set in 2008. On Tuesday and Wednesday, record high temperatures were also reached Paso Robles which reached the 90s and in areas such as Oxnard, Camarillo, Santa Barbara and Ramona in San Diego County.

By late Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service noted that coastal temperatures in Los Angeles County were "trending way up" from Tuesday.

"A more widespread cooling trend will begin Thursday but temperatures will remain above normal through Saturday," according to the NWS. "Then much cooler next Monday and Tuesday with a chance of rain."
