Red Carpets, Tributes and Global Cinema: Inside the 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival

Over 11 days, the festival highlighted a broad slate of films and honorees, drawing artists and audiences from around the world.

SANTA BARBARA, CA — The 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival closed out another year of premieres, panels and honors, bringing filmmakers, performers and audiences to Santa Barbara for an 11‑day celebration of international storytelling.

As a stop on the road to the Oscars, the festival drew industry attention with its tributes, discussions and standout films, underscoring its role in shaping the trajectory of awards season.

SBIFF presented its major tributes, celebrating some of the year’s most distinguished artists. Stellan Skarsgård was honored with the Montecito Award, while Ethan Hawke received the 2026 American Riviera Award. Michael B. Jordan was recognized with the 2026 Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, and the Hammond Cinema Vanguard Award was presented to Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro. Rounding out the festival’s top honors, Adam Sandler was awarded the Maltin Modern Master Award.

Earlier in the season, SBIFF also presented the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film to Cynthia Erivo, honoring her remarkable contributions to contemporary cinema.

This year’s festival celebrated an exceptional group of performers with the Virtuosos Award, which honors actors whose breakthrough performances stood out across the film landscape, placing them firmly in this year’s awards‑season spotlight. The 2026 honorees were Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Amy Madigan, Wagner Moura, Wunmi Mosaku and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas.

The festival also honored four filmmakers with the Outstanding Directors of the Year Award, recognizing a slate of bold, distinctive visions that defined the cinematic landscape. Ryan Coogler was celebrated for “Sinners,” Josh Safdie for “Marty Supreme,” Joachim Trier for “Sentimental Value,” and Chloé Zhao for “Hamnet.”

SBIFF also recognized the craftspeople whose artistry shapes the cinematic experience through its Variety Artisans Award Tribute. This year’s honorees included composer Alexandre Desplat, songwriter EJAE, production designer Jack Fisk, costume designer Kate Hawley, makeup artist Mike Hill, editor Andy Jurgensen, supervising sound editor Al Nelson, cinematographer Adolpho Veloso, visual effects artist Eric Saindon and sound mixer Chris Welcker — a group representing the full spectrum of behind‑the‑scenes excellence.

The festival’s top prize, the Audience Choice Award, went to Tia Lessin and Carl Deal’s “Steal This Story, Please,” a documentary about the life and career of journalist Amy Goodman that resonated deeply with festivalgoers.

Dedicated to showcasing independent and international cinema, the 2026 Santa Barbara International Film Festival opened on Feb. 4 with “A Mosquito in the Ear” by Nicola Rinciari and closed on Feb. 14 with “Laundry (Uhlanjululo)” by Zamo Mkhwanazi.
