1. 59 Pallets Of Stolen Nike Shoes, Yeti Products, Vacuums Seized In LA County Cargo Theft Bust: Police (patch.com) — Los Angeles residents are learning more about a major LAPD cargo theft investigation that led to the arrest of a Whittier shoe store owner and the recovery of about $1 million in stolen railroad goods. The operation, coordinated by LAPD's Cargo Theft Task Force with multiple rail and port police agencies, seized 59 pallets of high-end shoes, Yeti products, backpacks and vacuums from the LA County business.

Possible shooting on 110 Freeway in South L.A. under investigation (ktla.com) — A possible shooting on the northbound 110 in South Los Angeles near Slauson shut down a freeway shoulder Tuesday afternoon as CHP and LAFD investigated a white SUV with shattered windows. One man was evaluated but not hospitalized, and officers are still working to confirm whether gunfire actually occurred.

Social media captures Southern California squirrels "splooting" in midst of sweltering heat wave (cbsnews.com) — As the latest Southern California heat wave drags on, Angelenos are spotting squirrels "splooting"—lying flat with legs splayed—to cool off in parks and yards. Local wildlife experts say it's normal heat-beating behavior and urge residents not to feed or water wild animals, but instead give them space and shade so they can cope naturally.
   

5. Simon Rodia spent 33 years building 17 towers in his Los Angeles yard from bottles, tiles and seashells; the finished towers are now a national landmark (parade.com) — Los Angeles' Watts Towers, built over three decades by Simon Rodia from scrap materials in his Watts yard, survived a demolition attempt and are now a protected landmark. Guided tours run Thursday through Saturday, and a broader campus renovation is underway, giving locals more reasons to rediscover this iconic folk-art site.
