Sit ‘n Sleep CEO Larry Miller to donate furniture to foster youth

Larry Miller says "Your Mattress is Free!" and includes other furniture too that he is donating to local foster youth, Dec. 19 in Torrance

Sit ‘n Sleep entrepreneur Larry Miller takes his famous tagline -- “Your Mattress is Free!” -- to heart and provides beds and furniture to transitional-aged foster youth, Dec. 19

Sit `n Sleep has partnered with Aspiranet, a leading human services agency of California, to support foster youth as they begin their transition to adulthood and independent living.

For two foster youth graduating from Aspiranet’s Transitional Housing Plus (THP) Foster Care program, Sit `n Sleep entrepreneur Larry Miller will acknowledge their inspirational achievements by donating furniture and home accessories to them. Each youth will receive a mattress, bed frame, dressers, nightstands, bedding and other items to help their transition to independence.

Aspiranet’s THP Plus Foster Care is a placement option for non-minor dependents who wish to stay in Extended Foster Care, and helps “bridge the gap” for those who will no longer live in a foster home. The program provides a safe and supportive living environment for youth to experience more independent living, with the assistance of a life coach and county worker.

Both the youth (Alondra and Carolina) currently attend community college, have jobs and will be transferring to a 4-year university. Alondra has been in the foster care system for five years and would like to become a social worker; Carolina’s goal is to be a child therapist, so she can help other children who have gone through the struggles she has experienced. According to the John Burton Advocates for Youth “California College Pathways” report, only 4% of former foster youth obtain a bachelor’s degree by age 26, as compared to 50% of the same-age non-foster youth population.

Larry Miller, CEO of Sit `n Sleep says, “We are so thrilled to help celebrate the accomplishments of these young women; they are true success stories and a great example of the good work Aspiranet is doing for youth in foster care. We hope that making sure they have what they need for a good night’s sleep helps them continue on their path to a bright future.”
