LOS ANGELES, CA — Rapper Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday after being convicted of shooting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in the feet during an argument three years ago.

Lanez was convicted last Dec. 23 of one felony count each of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Judge David Herriford of Los Angeles Superior Court handed down the sentence Tuesday.

The two rappers left a party at Kylie Jenner's Hollywood Hills house together on July 12, 2020 riding in an SUV, the Associated Press reported. Megan testified during the trial that Lanez told her to "dance, bitch" as she walked away from the SUV and he shot five rounds at her feet. She claimed that Lanez offered her $1 million to keep quiet about the incident.

Megan wrote about her experience in Elle magazine.

"Not only did I survive being shot by someone I trusted and considered a close friend, but I overcame the public humiliation of having my name and reputation dragged through the mud by that individual for the entire world to see," she wrote.

Prosecutors in a sentencing memorandum wrote that Lanez has re-traumatized Megan with posts about the case that emboldened some of his millions of followers to attack her, the AP reported.

Lanez, who has been behind bars since his conviction, wrote in an April Instagram post that he was wrongfully convicted and was denied a fair trial.

Lanez "suffered from a mental condition, alcohol-use disorder, at the time of the offense," according to the defense's sentencing memorandum, in which his attorneys wrote that "the evidence of guilt is questionable at best and by no means overwhelming."

The judge said he had received more than 70 letters on Lanez's behalf, including one from musician Iggy Azalea, whom he said had requested a sentence that was "transformational, not life-destroying," along with one from Lanez' young son.

Prosecutors asked the Superior Court judge to sentence Lanez to 13 years in state prison, while defense attorneys requested that the Canadian rapper get only probation.
