4 Ways to Control Your Seasonal Allergies

Winter rains caused an unusually high pollen count in Orange County. These tips can help you control your allergies and breathe easier.

Orange County received an unprecedented amount of rainfall throughout the winter months this year. The wet conditions were great news for an area that’s seen five years of drought and dry conditions, leading to an increase in blossoms and blooms of local trees and flowers. Although this rain was much needed, it’s causing trouble for a large majority of Californians. According to Dr. Levy from UC Irvine, Orange County residents are “experiencing an uptick in their allergy symptoms.” This means more coughing, sneezing, and itching than we’ve experienced in the past. Fortunately, there are four household practices that you can follow to reduce the effects of airborne annoyances.

Keep Windows and Doors Closed During High Pollen Days

If you’re already experiencing some of the symptoms of seasonal allergies, you might want to bookmark the pollen forecast web page and visit it each morning. Staying alert and aware of the air quality in Orange County will help you to prepare for the day. On days with higher pollen counts, keep your windows and doors closed as often as possible.

Change Air Filters

Even if you have air conditioning and are able to keep your windows closed through the pollen season, it’s still important to change your air filters often. This is a simple home maintenance task, but unfortunately it often gets overlooked. Many new homeowners don’t even know how to change the filters. You can find DIY instructions here.

Keep Shower Curtains and Bathroom Cleaned

Dr. Chiriboga believes that one of the main allergy irritants comes from mold build up. As the weather gets warmer, we see an increase in the amount of mold in household bathrooms. Pay extra attention to your shower curtain and bathroom surfaces while cleaning during the spring season.

Use an Air Purifier

Even if you are changing your air filters frequently, you would be surprised to see how many irritants are circulating in your home. For added protection, purchase an air filter for the rooms you spend the most time in.

Following these four steps will help you breathe easier and feel happier this spring season and in the months to come.
