LOS ANGELES, CA — It was a big night for the Los City Council incumbents and big names in local politics.

In early returns, each Los Angeles City Council incumbent jumped off to a solid lead. In the two council races without an incumbent running some well-known political figures emerged as the early frontrunners. Former State Senator Kevin De Leon got off to a commanding lead in District 14, and longtime Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas was leading in District 10. However, by Wednesday morning Ridley-Thomas, appeared to be shy of the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff race. In the 4th District serving the Hollywood Hills area, incumbent David Ryu was also under the 50 percent threshold. He appears headed to runoff election with runner-up Nithya Raman. However, with some votes remaining to be tallied, it could be days until the results are certified.

Twenty-two candidates vied for seven seats on the Los Angeles City Council. Once all the ballots are counted, there will be at least two new faces among the city's 15 councilmembers as both Herb Wesson or Jose Huizar are termed out.
