Register Makes News By Publishing Long Beach Edition

A new "unusual" daily print newspaper published by the Orange County Register debuted in Long Beach on Monday.

The Long Beach Register represents the Orange County Register's first expansion outside Orange County since it was acquired last year by Aaron Kushner and Eric Spitz, who bought its parent company, Freedom Communications Inc.

John Murray, vice president of the Newspaper Association of America, an industry trade group, said the launch of a newspaper was not a common occurrence.

"With so many newspapers focused solely on new digital initiatives, it is unusual to see a newspaper move forward on a daily paid print product," he told the Register. "I can't recall the last launch similar to this."

The Long Beach Register will publish Monday through Friday and include 16 or more pages of local news and advertising daily, the OC Register reported.

The Long Beach Register will wrap around the Orange County Register so subscribers will get both papers. Seven-day subscribers will receive Long Beach sports and varsity news in the Orange County Register on Saturday and the full Orange County Register on Sunday.
