📰 News we're reading

• LGSUHSD joins Canvas breach lawsuit, food co-op (losgatan.com) — Los Gatos-Saratoga high school families are seeing their district join a lawsuit over the massive Canvas data breach, aiming to shift future identity-theft liability away from local schools. At the same meeting, trustees approved joining a regional food purchasing co-op to cut cafeteria costs, honored standout staff and a student leader, and confirmed every student has needed textbooks and materials for 2026-27.

• Fire investigators didn't find smoke detectors in Monte Sereno house that burned, killing two seniors (losgatan.com) — A deadly Monte Sereno house fire that killed an elderly couple had no working smoke detectors and was worsened by heavy clutter, according to Santa Clara County Fire officials. With Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police assisting the investigation, local leaders now plan outreach urging Los Gatos and Monte Sereno residents to install and maintain smoke alarms to prevent similar tragedies.

• Election 2026: After recent conflict and controversy, three seats are up for grabs at the Santa Clara Valley Water District (mercurynews.com) — Los Gatos voters will help decide a pivotal Santa Clara Valley Water District race this fall, as their town sits inside hotly contested District 7. Candidates Rebecca Eisenberg and Pete Dailey offer sharply different styles and views on big-ticket issues like new reservoirs, flood control, and water rates, while two other district races could reshape how the $1.2 billion agency is run.
